Lower Athabasca Regional Plan Progress
Status: Progress reports for 2013 and 2014 are now available.
Regional outcomes are realized through ongoing implementation of provincial strategies as well as new region-specific strategies implemented through LARP.
Progress Since 2012
Land-use Framework (LUF) Progress Report 2013 summarized results achieved with respect to the strategies and outcomes committed to in LARP during the first full year of its implementation. While it highlighted initiatives that were underway and on track, it reminded us that some of the initiatives such as those involving sub-regional planning in the South Athabasca Oil Sands area, developing a biodiversity management framework and landscape management plan, updating the surface water quantity management framework and developing a regional parks plan for the Lower Athabasca were delayed.
LUF Progress Report 2014 summarizes the results achieved during the second full year of LARP implementation. Of the five initiatives reported as delayed in LUF Progress Report 2013, two improved their status while three maintained their status in 2014. Additionally, three strategies involving Lakeland Country Destination Development Plan, tourism opportunity assessments for Quarry of the Ancestors, Bitumount and Fort Chipewyan, and implementation of the Groundwater Management Framework for the Lower Athabasca region were added to the delayed list in 2014 with commitments to complete this work by 2017.
The balance of the 35 strategies remain on track or on-going.
As a means of assessing whether regional outcomes and objectives are being achieved, a series of economic, environmental and social indicators are regularly monitored, evaluated and reported in the progress reports.
